Operating since 1990, the Heritage School of Music is the Jazz & Heritage Foundation's longest-running education program. The school is free and serves students ages 8 to 17 from throughout the greater New Orleans region. Classes are held on Saturday mornings and after-school on Thursday afternoons at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart Street, New Orleans). The Heritage School of Music teaches the art, performance, and theory of jazz music.

The Heritage School students are engaged in a curriculum that includes instruction in instrumental technique (studio), ear training and the construction of musical compositions (theory), and jazz ensemble playing (combo).

Applications for the 2020-2021 school year will open soon. At this time, the fall 2020 semester will be completely online.
